Modern Farmer Tractor(To the tune of “Old McDonald Had a Farm.”)

      Modern Farmer had a website,
      E-I-E-I-S-E-O.
And on that website, Tuna helped them out.
      E-I-E-I-S-E-O.
      With web consulting here
      and site maintenance there.
Here some updates, there some monitoring.
      Everywhere some optimizing.
      Modern Farmer had a website,
      E-I-E-I-S-E-O.

Tilling the Soil

We here at Tuna Traffic discovered something while working with our client, Modern Farmer.

Farming is cool. Really cool.

We had no idea. Sure, we drive past red barns everyday as we head into Tuna School. Sure, before we used to office out of an ultra-chic renovated barn. And sure, the whole Tuna Team at one time or another has gone on an elementary school field trip to a farm and milked a cow.

But, thanks to our friends at Modern Farmer, we now know that farming is so much more than that.

And that’s the cool thing about Modern Farmer. They are all about making connections between what we eat, how we live and our planet. They are committed to expanding the global horizons of farming for, as they put it, “the window-herb growers, career farmers, people who have chickens, people who want to have chickens and anyone who wants to know more about how food reaches your plate.”

Now that’s cool.

Planting the Seeds

So, when Jake Swearingen, Modern Farmer’s Digital Director, told us they needed help to harness that agrarian energy and grow their vision, we put on our overalls and gassed up the Tuna Tractor.

From the get-go, Modern Farmer’s website had a lot of things going for it. They publish outstanding blogs and stimulating articles from a gifted group of contributing writers and delight us with a veritable plethora of eye-catching graphics. (And not just of cute farm animals, though they have that too. Take a peek at some of our favorite features on Modern Farmer’s site.) Most significantly, Modern Farmer had a crystal clear understanding of what they wanted and where they wanted to go.

Modern Farmer had so much to share with the casual and career farmers of the world; they just didn’t know how to reach them in a smart, cost-effective, user-friendly way. They needed to grow readership, increase traffic and enhance their web presence.

Tuna Traffic On-Demand Support

Even more than that, they needed expert guidance and steadfast support to seamlessly make changes, quickly remove obstacles and ensure their website runs like a well-oiled farm implement. That’s where we came in.

Modern Farmer asked us to:

  • Ensure support on demand.
  • Provide strategic web development and design consultation.
  • Oversee professional site maintenance, updates and changes.
  • Implement SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
  • Improve SERP (Search Engine Ranking Position).
  • Deliver detailed traffic analytics reporting.

Reaping What You Sow

Working with Modern Farmer is as sweet as an ear of corn, picked at the height of perfection, slathered in butter and mouth-wateringly delectable. We play the role of the-behind-the-scenes stage crew to their website, doing all those little things that make a good website a great website. From immediately responding to requests through IM (instant messaging) to installing a virtual goat cam to kick off Goat Week. (It’s mesmerizing. Take a look for yourself.)

Here’s what our buddy Jake Swearingen had to say about their new and improved web presence.

Working with Mike and the Tuna Team has been one of the best decisions we made at Modern Farmer. What’s great about Tuna isn’t just that they’re incredibly responsive (I can’t say how many times I’ve frantically IMed Mike at 10 p.m., only to have him put out a fire ten minutes later), but that they’ve helped immensely in setting priorities. Building and working on a website is a series of hard decisions – you want to do everything at once, but the reality is that you have to set priorities. Tuna’s advice, technical know-how, and clear-eyed strategic advice has been an invaluable advantage to us as a small start-up media company. It also doesn’t hurt that they’re a joy to work with – every interaction I’ve had with Tuna has been not only professional but fun as heck. It’s not every day you can say that about working hand-in-hand with web developers.

What do you get when you roll up your sleeves and combine hard work with web ingenuity?

One heck of a harvest.
